When Yelm resident Rory Sagner’s photograph “The Way Home” was selected as a winner in the “setting” category of Canon U.S.A.’s 2012 “Project Imaginat10n” photo contest, she was elated.

But that didn’t guarantee Sagner’s photo would be selected by one of the project’s celebrity filmmakers to be incorporated into a short film … until recently.

James Murphy, the former frontman of the band LCD Soundsystem, chose “The Way Home” as one of 10 photographs to inspire a short film he will direct.

Murphy is one of five celebrity directors. The others are Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, Biz Stone and Georgina Chapman.

Murphy’s film goes into production in 2013. Sagner has an invite to the Canon Project Imaginat10n Film Festival in 2013 to see Murphy’s film on the silver screen.

In a video posted to YouTube, Murphy seemed hesitant to reveal the motivation behind his photo choices, hinting that he didn’t want to give away too much information on the upcoming film.

But he said Sagner’s photo appealed to him personally among the photos in the “setting” category.

“I just like it because it’s really nice and I would want to be in this setting,” he said. “If you have to be on a set, it’s just wise for yourself to pick a setting that you want to be on, because I like snow.”

“I was thrilled, of course,” Sagner said of hearing Murphy had chosen her photo.

She said the Project Imaginat10n winners chat with each other on a Facebook group, and one of the main things the winners talk about is the hope of their photo being chosen by one of the celebrity directors.

Sagner said the directors are able to choose photos other directors have already picked and there’s no guarantee that winners will have their photos chosen.

“There’s a lot of good work, you really didn’t know. When I got the email (saying her photo had been chosen) I literally screamed, I admit it,” she said with a laugh.

Before the announcement had been made, Sagner said she had been thinking to herself that if any of the directors were to choose her photo, it would probably be Murphy.

“All the winners are really excited,” Sagner said, noting she’s been getting to know the other winners on Facebook.

“It’s just wonderful. I’m learning a ton from the more experienced photographers and it’s really one of the unexpected pluses of the whole experience, getting to meet such great, really talented people.”
